While Laura had defended Harris to the principal, she felt like she wanted to wring his neck. The stupidity of him! What man in his right mind would tell an eight year old girl that her classmate’s mother sleeps around? Who could be that stupid to assume that an eight year old had any understanding of appropriate or inappropriate behavior? In a shaky voice she said as lightly as possible, “Sweety, do you know where Taylor might be waiting for us?” She pulled out her phone to contact Taylor, she had just assumed he’d be waiting in the playground. There was a text waiting for her: “Taylor came with me today. We’re at the park. There was something I promised him we’d do. I hope you don’t mind, H.” She had no idea what it meant and read it aloud to Tori, who didn’t know either.

“Okay, I guess we’re off to the park.” Laura rehearsed what she was going to say to Harris when she got to the park. “Harris you idiot….,” no that wasn’t right. “How stupid are you anyway?” Too abrupt. “I know you meant well, but what were you thinking? Do you have a brain deficiency?” She continued in this way, coaching herself to try to be as polite as possible until they arrived at the park. “Are you going to get mad at Harris? Don’t be too mad at him, he made me promise not to tell anyone, but I was so mad at Alyssa that I couldn’t help it.”

“I promise I’ll be nice to him.” At least while you and Taylor are present. It might be time for Harris to leave Bollier Estates, she thought, but the business voice inside her protested: If he left she’d be forfeiting a growing number of tours and attention. She scanned the park and couldn’t see either Harris or Taylor.

There were tennis courts at the far end of the park and a soccer field. There was a soccer practice happening on the field, and a few people were playing tennis. “Let’s go check out the soccer field. Maybe they’re there.”

“Why would they be playing soccer?” said Tori. She pointed to the tennis courts. “That looks like Taylor playing. Hey, that means that Taylor got a B- on his last math test!” Tori did a little whoop and took off in front of her mother, running toward the courts. Laura frowned, not understanding what Tori was saying, but she followed her daughter, rehearsing in her mind the blast she was going to give Harris when she saw him.

But when she caught up to Tori,
